RUU355 was tabled by Hadi in 2016 and was listed for second reading in March 2018 but never saw the light of day.

MCA’s Tanjung Piai candidate Wee Jeck Seng says the private member’s bill by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to give shariah courts wider powers is now a thing of the past, a day after a senator from Pakatan Harapan (PH) asked how PAS could support a candidate from MCA given the party’s stand against the move.

Wee said the bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, known as RUU355, ceased to exist after PH took over last year.

“We (MCA) stated our stand in rejecting the bill,” he told reporters after attending a meet-and-greet session with Kukup residents.

“You should ask the government today what they think about RUU 355 now.”

During a ceramah yesterday, Kelantan PH chairman Husam Musa had questioned Wee’s stand on RUU355.

Husam asked how PAS could support Wee if the latter maintained his stand against the bill.

RUU355 was tabled by Hadi in 2016. It was listed for second reading in March 2018 but never saw the light of day.

PAS’ Sik MP Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman recently asked the government in the Dewan Rakyat whether PH intended to table the bill.

However, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa said last year that the bill was not suitable within the framework of shariah laws. – FMT
