Zaid said that Zafrul needed to be specific about whether he was calling out the party’s top leadership or the other factions in the party.

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has chided International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz over the latter’s latest rant on Umno lacking leaders with fresh ideas to help revamp the grand old party.

In a statement posted on X, Zaid said that Zafrul needs to start calling out names instead of general jabs against the party leadership for the sake of maintaining decorum.

“Zafrul is a typical Umno leader. When they are on the attack, they never talk straight. Their speeches are full of riddles and no names are ever mentioned.

“Some say that’s the Melayu style; never direct and does not want to embarrass the targets. However, the Melayu style smacks of a feudal past; it is cowardice and no longer serves any purpose,” he said.

Yesterday, Zafrul said on X that the party needs leaders with fresh ideas to make the party appealing again to the masses. He made the commentary after attending the Umno Tanjong division annual general meeting.

Zafrul, who is also an Umno supreme council member, said the party’s leaders need to stop exchanging friendly fire over trivial issues, which he said showed a deprivation of ideas within the party.

Elaborating further, Zaid said that Zafrul needed to be specific about whether he is calling out the party’s top leadership or the other factions in the party such as former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

“What’s so daunting about naming names? Then, the speech at Tanjong will have meaning and effect.

“For Zafrul’s information, there are no more leaders left with ideas. What is left are leaders with positions. Their job is to carry out whatever Madani expects them to do,” he added. – Malaysiakini
