It was a culture in 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) that one is either to follow instructions or make their own way out of the company, a witness revealed today.
Former 1MDB chief executive officer Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman said this was especially when the instructions came from fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, who claimed that the orders were from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Hazem was testifying in Najib’s trial involving the misappropriation of RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds.
He said this during cross-examination by counsel Wan Aizuddin Wan Mohammed – who was questioning Hazem on the e-mails containing Low’s instructions regarding 1MDB’s acquisition of independent power plants (IPP) Genting Sanyen Power Sdn Bhd and Tanjong Energy Holdings Sdn Bhd in 2013.
The 10th prosecution witness was also referred to his witness statement where he said he did not dare give his opinion about the acquisition out of fear that his career would be jeapordised if he did not support Najib, who was the prime minister at that time.
Hazem said, at that time, he was of the view that the acquisitions were expensive and would place 1MDB at a disadvantage.
He said this was based on his personal experience in the acquisition of assets.
“You have to follow, you have to give responses that will be acceptable to the public and not the reality of it,” the witness said.
He said if he had given his own personal view with regards to the acquisition, he would be regarded as not playing along with 1MDB, which would end up jeopardising his career.
Hazem, who held the top post in 1MDB in 2013, said he did not go against Low’s instructions as “Jho Low ran the company”.
Asked if he did not want to offend Low, Hazem said if he had opposed, his career would be in jeopardy.
The witness said he tried raising his frustrations about the company to Low via Blackberry Messenger chats and one of them was in relation to the acquisition of a YTL power plant proposal.
He said his opinion was that the acquisition was overpriced and would put 1MDB in bad light.
Wan Aizuddin: Did Jho Low threaten you for bringing it up?
Hazem: No. He said in 1MDB, if you do not follow the directions, you might as well quit. It’s a culture, even in any company either you follow your boss or if you are not happy with your boss, you quit,
Najib, 68, faces 20 years’ jail and fine, if convicted.
The trial continues before High Court judge Colin Lawrence Sequerah tomorrow. – NST
