Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has welcomed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remark on working together for the Malay cause.
“I realise that the latest political developments have put the Malays and Islam in the country at a crossroads.
“Thus, as a Muslim, I personally am willing to work with any Malay-Muslim leader, including Tun Dr Mahathir, to champion the race, religion, and country,” Muhyiddin said in a brief statement posted on his Facebook today.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson was responding to a news report that Mahathir was willing to work with Muhyiddin for the Malay-Muslim cause.
In an interview with the Malaysia Now portal, the nonagenarian was asked whether he was willing to work with Muhyiddin again in any aspect for the country’s future.
Mahathir did not provide a concrete answer but merely said that he is willing to cooperate with anyone who shares the same objective as him on race and religion.
The former prime minister, however, explicitly named Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as a leader he cannot work with again, as the latter allegedly does not look after the Malays.
Mahathir also slammed Umno, stressing that he will not work with those involved in corruption, sentenced to jail, and so on.
It is worth noting that Muhyiddin is facing four abuse of power charges and three money laundering counts involving over RM232 million, allegedly committed during his time as prime minister.
The Pagoh MP has claimed trial to all seven charges.
Mahathir has in recent days insisted that the Malays have “lost power” and launched a “Malay People’s Proclamation” – a document which urged Malays to unite to “save” their race. – Malaysiakini
