Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is demanding Dr Mahathir Mohamad apologise for claiming he sought the former prime minister’s help to drop his corruption charges.

Zahid said that a letter of demand had been issued to the Pejuang chairman.

This comes after Mahathir said earlier today that Zahid paid him a visit and sought his help to drop corruption charges against him.

However, Zahid said he had never made any such request to Mahathir and accused him of lying.

“I was invited along with other party presidents by Mahathir to endorse our support to form a unity government.

“How can I ask for the charges to be dropped in front of so many people. I have never asked Mahathir to do so,” he said in a Facebook post.

Zahid further questioned how he could have lobbied and asked Mahathir to drop his charges when he had not yet been appointed the country’s seventh prime minister.

“At the time, I was still the deputy prime minister and there was no investigation related to corruption launched against me, what more charges.

“I have instructed my lawyer to issue a letter of demand to Mahathir for him to apologise over his lies,” he said.

Earlier today, Mahathir claimed that Zahid alongside several people had met him at his house adding that he wanted to be friendly before Mahathir became prime minister for a second time.

“At the time, there was a possibility that I might become the prime minister, that’s why he wanted to ‘make nice’ with me.

“But I knew, Zahid’s problem was that there was a possibility that he could be imprisoned due to the wrongdoings and crimes he did,” he said.

Mahathir also claimed that after Umno returned to power, Zahid had tried to shake off all other legal actions against him. – FMT
