Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi believes that Khairy Jamaluddin should be thankful to him for being given a chance to contest in Sungai Buloh in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Zahid said Khairy, who is caretaker health minister, by rights was not allocated a seat to contest as the Rembau seat, which Khairy had held since 2008, is being contested by Umno number two, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

“He should be thankful to me because I gave him an opportunity to contest in Sungai Buloh,” said Zahid, who is also Umno president.

Zahid said Mohamad, who is also BN’s Negri Sembilan chairman, is “more qualified” to contest the Rembau seat.

“I gave him (Khairy) a chance to contest in Sungai Buloh, even though it’s not his place. As such, he needs to work hard to win the seat and contribute towards BN’s ability to form a new federal government,” he told reporters in Bagan Datuk today.

Zahid also commented on Khairy’s remarks that the latter hoped of becoming the prime minister one day, saying that it was up to Khairy himself.

“In the first place, he must strengthen the party, not weaken it. He has to win in Sungai Buloh. He also has to be accepted by the party and not go against it.

“We can have differences in opinion. But if one if constantly trying to show that one is the best, the cleverest, the wisest, then that’s just ‘perasan’ (flattering oneself),” he said.

Khairy had previously said that Zahid may not be pleased with him for taking issue with his candidacy in GE15. – NST
